Thanks to the Australasian Bird Fair from the Plains-wanderer recovery team

The critically endangered Plains-wanderer is very unusual in having no close relatives anywhere in the world. In 2014 researchers ranked the world’s 9,993 species of bird in terms of their evolutionary distinctiveness and extinction risk. They placed the Plains-wanderer first among Australian birds and fourth in the world.

Despite such rankings, most Australians outside of birding circles have never heard of the Plains-wanderer. To help fill this knowledge gap, BirdLife Australia has produced an identification and habitat management guide with half of the $10,000 donated by the Australasian Bird Fair.
